Hancock High School senior Alexis Staples is involved in volleyball, basketball and softball for the Owls.  When she isn’t competing in athletics she is active in BPA, band, choir, Knowledge Bowl and Yearbook.

“My favorite school subject is History,” shared Staples.  “One of my top sports memories would have to be beating WCA in our home gym in basketball.  The pure joy we shared as a team was something I will never forget!”

Staples was a member of the All-Conference Basketball team as a junior and an honorable mention All-Conference selection as a sophomore and freshman.  She was also Defensive Player of the Year in Basketball last season and served as a volleyball captain this fall.

“Alexis has played a key role in helping our program become a contender in the conference,” stated Head Girls Basketball Coach Tony Thielke.  “This is evident in the time she spends in the gym trying to improve her skills and trying to persuade her teammates to do the same.  She is one of the last ones to leave the gym after practice.  One thing that stands out is her willingness and dedication to helping with the youth program on Saturdays.  She has spent numerous Saturdays helping our youth improve their basketball skills.  So many of our younger students look up to her.”

Volleyball Coach Kortney Ejnik commented, “Lexi has been a huge asset to the volleyball team this year.  She plays all the way around for us and always brings a calming attitude.  Lexi works hard in practice and it was great to see her step up into her role.  She had a great season and I’m very proud of her.”

Lexi plans on attending college, majoring in either elementary education or communication and science disorders.  She is not decided on a particular college at this time.

Alexis says, “Being involved in sports has taught me many life lessons, including how to work hard, being dedicated, how to communicate and how to be a team player.  The relationship with my teammates and coaches will always have a special place in my heart.”

“Lexi is a tremendous role model for all of our student-athletes,” observed Head Softball Coach Ryan Snyder.  “She has a positive attitude and gives tremendous effort in everything that she does.  Lexi has been an integral part of the inception of our softball program, as she has been playing varsity since she was and eighth-grader.  We will heavily rely on her leadership and experience the next time we hit the field.”

Staples leaves this advice to underclassmen, “Try to be involved in as many high school activities as possible.  The time you spend with your classmates in priceless.”
