Comets Come up Short Against Onamia

Hillcrest Lutheran Academy hosted Onamia in a high school football contest on Thursday night in Fergus Falls with the visiting Panthers taking a 38-28 victory from the Comets.

Nick Ecker returned the opening kick-off 75 yards for a touchdown and Noah Rohloff hit Brady Husom with the two-point conversion pass to give the Panthers an 8-0 lead eleven seconds into the contest.  Hillcrest responded with an 8-play, 62-yard scoring drive, culminated by an 18 yard pass from Caden Fischer to Leo Nordick.  Fischer then connected with Evan Lindgren on a two-point conversion pass, tying the game at 8-8 with 7:57 left in the first quarter.  Trey Carl recovered an Onamia fumble at the 50 yard line and the Comets scored on a 12 yard pass from Fischer to Zayne Weinrich with six minutes remaining in the quarter, putting Hillcrest in front, 14-8.

On their next possession, the Comets went 70 yards in 12 plays with Weinrich on the receiving end of a 5 yard scoring toss from Fischer.  After a two-point conversion run by Lindgren the Comets had a 22-8 lead with 9:05 remaining in the half.  Micah Bermel recovered a fumble on the Panthers first play from scrimmage, but the Comets were stopped on downs at the Onamia fifteen yard line with less than five minutes to play in the half.  Onamia went 85 yards in 11 plays with Rohloff scoring on a 4 yard run and adding a two-point conversion run to cut the Hillcrest lead to 22-16 at the break.

The Comets were stopped on downs at the Onamia 30 yard line on their first possession of the second half.  The Panthers then went 70 yards in just three plays with Rohloff hooking up with AJ Drift on a 38 yard touchdown pass with 7:05 left in the third quarter, tying the game at 22-22.

The game remained tied until the 3:14 mark of the fourth quarter when Ecker hauled in a 29 yard pass from Rohloff.  Rohloff hit Drift with the conversion pass and Onamia led 30-22.  After Hillcrest was stopped on downs, Onamia scored again, this time on a 2-yard run by Donny Bieganek.  Bieganek also ran the ball in for the two-point conversion, increasing the Onamia lead to 38-22.  On the ensuing kick-off Weinrich broke loose for a 70-yard kick-off return, putting the final score at 38-28.

Bieganek ran for 100 yards on 15 carries to lead the Panthers.  Rohloff completed 9-of-17 passes for 166 yards.  Drift caught four passes for 73 yards and Ecker was on the receiving end of four passes for 61 yards.  Onamia had 325 total yards.

Leaders for Hillcrest were Caden Fischer (20 carries, 99 yards, 16 completions, 29 attempts, 172 yards, 3 TD’s), Evan Lindgren (19 carries, 99 yards), Zeke Ihrke (4 catches, 64 yards) and Weinrich (4 receptions, 40 yards).
