The Breckenridge Cowboys scored 34 first quarter points, led 47-0 at halftime and defeated the Staples-Motley Cardinals 54-0 on Wednesday night in Breckenridge.

The Cowboys got it started early as James Mertes raced 80 yards to the end zone with the opening kick-off.  Cooper Yaggie tacked on the extra-point kick and the Cowboys led 7-0.  A 55 yard punt return for a TD by Dylan Bernotas and another PAT kick by Yaggie gave Breckenridge a 14-0 lead before they even ran an offensive play in the game.  Yaggie connected with Connor Twidwell on a 5 yard scoring pass for the third Breckenridge touchdown, giving the home team a 20-0 lead.  Yaggie then hooked up with Jacob Vizenor on a 47-yard TD and added the extra-point kick to expand the lead to 27-0.  Yaggie’s third TD pass of the quarter covered 22 yards to Vizenor.  His fourth extra-point kick of the quarter put the 34th point on the board.

A 5 yard touchdown run by Mertes to begin the second quarter upped the lead to 40-0 and a 65 yard punt return by Vizenor, followed by another Yaggie PAT kick, gave the Cowboys a 47-0 lead at the half.

Breckenridge added a third quarter TD on a 6 yard run by Daniel Erlandson.  Yaggie’s kick put the score at 54-0.

Yaggie completed 5-of-7 passes for 114 yards and 3 scores.  Erlandson (2 catches, 40 yards) and Vizenor (2 catches, 69 yards, 2 TD’s) led the receiving corps.  Erlandson ran for 60 yards on 8 carries and Mertes had 44 yards rushing on 6 carries to lead the ground attack for the Cowboys. Defensively, Reece Pederson had an interception.
