Wadena-Deer Creek scored a late touchdown with just over four minutes left in the game on Wednesday, and then kept the Underwood Rockets from scoring on their final possession as the Wolverines recorded a 22-20 victory in Wadena.

Underwood got on the scoreboard first as Reed Leabo connected with Tristen Evavold on a 9 yard TD pass with 8:53 to go in the first quarter, giving the visitors a 6-0 lead.  With 3:11 left in the quarter Payton Rondestvedt hooked up with Josh Dykhoff on a 19 yard touchdown pass and a two-point conversion pass put WDC in front, 8-6.

With 1:50 remaining in the second quarter, Slade Moore ran the ball in from the 9 yard line and Logan Schleske added a two-point conversion run to send Underwood into halftime with a 14-8 advantage.

Wadena-Deer Creek pulled even at 14-14 with 2:55 remaining in the third quarter when Rondestvedt once again connected with Dykhoff, this time from 11 yards out.

Underwood regained the lead with 7:03 left in the game on a 2 yard run by Krosby Aasness, however, the two-point try was stopped.  That left the door open for the Wolverines, who tied the game on a 39 yard TD pass by Rondestvedt and then put the go-ahead and eventual winning points on the board with a 2-point conversion pass, making it a 22-20 game.

"I love the way we played tonight, we played hard-nosed, aggressive football,” said Underwood Head Coach Ryan Hendrickson.  “We won the game in a lot of aspects but unfortunately the final score is all that matters.  We were unable to punch it in a couple times inside the 5 yard line and only scored on 1 of our PATs, then had a couple costly turnovers.  We brought a very physical game, did a lot of things right, and for that I am proud of the guys.  Now, going into playoffs we have to win the turnover battle and bring our physicality even more."

Underwood finished with 349 yards of total offense, 330 coming on the ground.  Aasness had a huge night with 165 rushing yards on 26 carries.  Schleske (17 carries, 79 yards) and Moore (11 carries, 71 yards) added to the potent running attack on display throughout the night.   Leabo completed 2-of-5 passes for 19 yards and Jaxon Rich had one reception for 10 yards.

Defensive leaders for the Rockets were Moore (7 solo tackles, 2 assisted tackles), Leabo (4 solo tackles, 1 assisted tackle) and Rich (2 solo tackles, 2 assisted tackles, 1 sack).

Rondestvedt completed 9-of-16 passes for 139 yards and 3 touchdowns.  He also led WDC with 97 rushing yards on 14 carries.
