Nuggets Hold on for 21-18 Win Over Staples-Motley

The Hawley Nuggets built a 21-12 halftime lead in Staples on Friday, October 23, and then held on for a 21-18 victory over the Staples-Motley Cardinals.

Justin Koski scored on an 8-yard run to spot the Nuggets a 6-0 lead with 9:13 left in the first quarter.  Less than a minute later the Cardinals countered with a 40 yard TD run by Sivert Kelfsaas, tying the game at 6-6.

A 20 yard run by Klefsaas with 9:14 left in the first half gave the Cardinals their only lead of the night at 12-6.  Hawley scored at 7:51 on a 52 yard run by Sam Burkel and two-point conversion run by Burkel, regaining the lead at 14-12.  They then scored with just 51 seconds remaining in the half on a 5-yard run by Koski and PAT kick by Burkel, increasing their lead to 21-12 at the break.

A 25-yard TD run early in the third quarter by Klefsaas finished the scoring for the night.

Hawley compiled 356 (268 rushing, 88 passing) total yards in the game.  They were led by Burkel (23 carries, 186 yards) and Koski (24 carries, 102 yards).  Cole Sunde completed 4-of-9 passes for 88 yards, two of them to Joey Aakre, covering 41 yards.  Defensive leaders were Koski (5 solo tackles), Magnusson (3 solo tackles, 3 assisted tackles, 1 sack), Lance Weiss (5 solo tackles) and Kaden Murphy (4 solo tackles, 1 assisted tackles, 1 interception).

Klefsaas had a huge game for the Cardinals, running for 189 yards on 20 attempts.  Quarterback Isaiah Schultz completed 8-of-19 passes for 71 yards and Chandler Braith (2 catches, 33 yards) was the leading receiver.
