Barnesville traveled to Frazee on Tuesday night for a Heart O’ Lakes Conference volleyball match, which the Trojans won in three sets, 25-23, 25-22, 25-21.

“We started off slower than usual and struggled getting plays moving on our side of the net tonight,” stated Barnesville Head Coach Megan Askegaard. “We had to work much harder on serve receive and defense than we typically do to put our ball on the net to the setter. Our passing was off and we really didn’t move our feet very well. We were swinging our arms and not getting our body behind the ball and putting it on the net to get us into our offense. Our block was a just a little early and we were getting some poor touches and losing points on the net. I could see a little frustration in the girls tonight as they knew they wanted to perform at the highest level and we were really battling to play our best game tonight. We made many errors in the first set that cost us too many points, however our strong serving and tough defense kept us in the first set."

Coach Askegaard continued, "In set two, we found some holes in the Frazee defense behind their block to allow Lexi Bolgrean (6 kills, 11/11 serving, 14 digs) and Sam Passa (8 kills, 10/12 serving) to score some easy points on the Hornet side. Kim Maesse (10 set assists, 13/13 serving, 1 ace, 6 digs) and Katie Newell (13 set assists, 15/16 serving, 4 aces) ran the offense well and kept the ball moving to all their hitters up on the net. Liv Sorenson (3 kills, 3 solo blocks, 1 block assist), Lauren Halverson and Anna Stanford (3 kills) did an outstanding job attacking from the Right side and going after the Frazee setter in the backrow. We again made a few more errors than we would have liked on serve receive, but again our defense and smart net play allowed us to take control and finish the set.  We were trailing by a couple points in each rally in set one before we took control at 13 and pushed to the end of the set behind some strong serving points from Sam Passa that allowed us to finish the first set. The match ended by a big kill from Jordan Tschumperlin (4 kills, 9/9 serving, 1 ace) in the middle.”

Barnesville will travel again to Perham on Thursday and Saturday this week.
