The Rothsay Tigers had their first football game in Rothsay for the 2020 year when they hosted the Hancock Owls on Friday night.  “Although there are no polls or state rankings this year, if there was the Owls would at or near the top, as they bring in a good football team,” stated Rothsay Head coach Joshua Nordick

The Tigers were looking to play the spoiler as they were coming off a close loss last week, however, the Owls took control early and went on to post a 50-0 victory.

“I thought we played hard,” said coach Nordick.  “We had a lot of guys in unfamiliar positions but we played fast on defense.  We will look to regroup for our last home game next week.”

Rothsay would start out on offense but quickly have to punt the ball away.  The Owls used their spread offense and scored on a four yard pass from Preston Rohloff to Brandon Kellenberger, taking a 6-0 lead.  They would score one more time on a 5-yard pass from Rohloff to Matt Thompson, followed by a two-point conversion run by Isaac Nienhaus, building their lead to 16-0 after the first quarter.  They would continue to take the game over and score 3 more times as Rothsay, missing a few players, were mixing in a lot of different personnel but couldn’t get anything going against the fast and athletic Hancock Owls for a halftime score of 36-0.   Touchdowns came on a 25 yard interception return by Devon Schroeder, followed by a two-point conversion run by Kellenberger, a 30 yard pass from Rohloff to Kellenberger and a twelve yard run by Nienhaus.  A two-point conversion pass from Rohloff to Luke Joos closed out the first half scoring.

The second half saw much of the same as both teams got some of their young players in and the Owls would get their shutout and win by a final score of 50-0. Joos scored on a 15 yard pass from Rohloff and a two-point conversion hook-up between the two players in the third quarter.  A David Rose 4-yard TD run in the fourth quarter completed the scoring on the night.

“This was a great team win for us with many different players contributing,” stated Hancock Head Coach Chad Christianson.  “The team has been playing very well on both sides of the ball this season and that continued into Friday night as the offense got going early and found the end zone on their first two possessions.  The defense also got into the scoring this week with three interceptions including a pick-6 from Devon Schroeder.  Preston Rohloff had another great game throwing for over 230 yards and 4 touchdowns.  Preston has done a great job this year behind the protection of the offensive line, not forcing throws but taking openings in the defense and distributing the ball to different receivers.  Brandon Kellenberger (5 receptions, 75 yards, 2 TDs) and Matt Thompson (4 catches, 78 yards, 1 TD) made their presence known on both sides of the ball combining for over 150 yards receiving and 3 touchdowns and setting the tone for the defense.”

Hancock (4-0) will host Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley at 3:00pm Saturday.

The Tigers will play Sebeka on Friday in a 3:00pm start time.
