The Battle Lake Battlers defeated the Hillcrest Comets on Tuesday night 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-21) in a Little Eight Conference volleyball match in Fergus Falls.

“We started off very slow and made a lot of errors,” said Battle Lake Head Coach Jennifer Roisum. “It took the Battlers a while to put things together after having 1.5 weeks off.  Hillcrest had a ton of energy and played very solid tonight.    Things were clicking for the Battlers in set two but they could not keep up the momentum in set 3.  Hillcrest had the lead in set 3 until the Battlers tied it at 19.  I am very impressed how we regrouped and we were able to finish the match strong.  These girls stepped up when they needed to.”

Grace Van Erp led the Battlers with 12 kills and 9 digs.  Kate Christensen and Hannah Cory each added 9 kills while Ady Tysdal added 5 kills.  The Battlers head to Ashby on Thursday for their next match.

Leaders for Hillcrest were Natalie Zwiers (4 kills, 1 block kill), Anna Brumfield (3 kills, 1 block kill), Madi Foss (13 digs, 3 kills, 2 ace serves), Mack Foss (13 digs, 3 kills, 5 serving points, 5 ace serves), Audra Ewan (7 set assists, 2 digs, 1 kill, 2 ace serves, 4 serving points) and Maddie Ballweg (4 service points, 1 ace serve, 2 kills, 7 set assists, 2 digs).

“We had to make some pretty significant changes in our lineup since Saturday due to injury and illness,” noted Hillcrest Head Coach Debi Foss.  “I am proud of the way some of the girls had to step into new roles and how everyone worked hard.  Sophomore Maddie Ballweg and senior Audra Ewan did a good job of playing all the way around.  It was a competitive match, but we’ve still got work to do on our coverage and fixing our unforced errors.  We did a better job of attacking the ball tonight.”

Hillcrest will play another Little Eight Conference match on Thursday in Rothsay.
