The Breckenridge Cowgirls improved their early season record to 2-0 with a Heart O’ Lakes Conference volleyball victory on Tuesday night, beating the Pelican Rapids Vikings 3-1 (21-25, 29-27, 25-17, 25-16).

Sophie Larson (22) and Carcie Materi (21) combined for 43 set assists to lead the Cowgirls.  Three players finished with double digit kill numbers, led by Camryn Kaehler with 22.  Abby Johnson and Jude Held added 11 kills each.

At the serving line, Kaehler had 9 aces and Larson had 5.  Dig leaders were Riley Finkral with 18, Kaehler with 10, Materi with 9 and Larson with 8.

Pelican Rapids was led by Greta Tollefson (12 kills, 8 digs, 15 set assists, 1 ace), Tori Stephenson (8 kills), Kelsey Isaman (5 kills, 12 digs, 2 aces), Anna Stephenson (4 kills, 3 aces, 6 digs) and Sophia Paulson (10 set assists, 3 digs).  Allie Haiby and Kiera Booth added 11 and 8 digs, respectively.

“We started out strong, passing the ball very well to get our offense in system,” commented Pelican Rapids Head Coach Heidi Isaman.  “Getting ourselves in system to have the opportunity to run a more complex offense was a big goal of ours for this game, so I was very pleased to see how strong the girls started in this area.  Sophomore Kelsey Isaman and senior Allie Haiby passed extremely well and our hitters took advantage of the opportunity.  Junior Tori Stephenson and freshman Ellie Welch did a very good job hitting the ball and gave us some big kills outside of the pins.  Senior setter and middle hitter Greta Tollefson did an amazing job of leading the team tonight.  Greta was extremely smart in finding the open spot on the court while staying very aggressive throughout the match.  After a good win in the opening set we had control of the second set but a few too many block coverage errors and a few miscommunications got the momentum to switch to the Cowgirls and we lost a very hard fought back-and-forth battle.  We did not pass the ball well in the third set and we found ourselves playing way more defense than offense which gave the Cowgirls strong outside hitters too many opportunities to swing away.  Our outside blocking was a big struggle for us tonight and the Cowgirls took advantage.”

Pelican Rapids will travel o DGF next Tuesday and then will host Frazee on Thursday, October 30.

Breckenridge has a Heart O’ Lakes Conference match in Perham on Thursday.
