Tuesday night the Fergus Falls girls’ tennis team had a fantastic semifinal round of playoff in the section 8AA consolation bracket.  Fergus Falls defeated Detroit Lakes 6-1 in an all-around great match for the Otters.  Tonight’s win puts the Otters in the consolation championship match on Thursday.

“What a great way to end our home season with a big win like this tonight,” exclaimed Head Coach Jamie Lill of Fergus Falls.  “In a typical year, we´d see DL a couple times and have a lot of common opponents on our scouting report.  This year was very different in that regard, so we weren´t exactly sure what to expect.  We knew we´d have to play well to get the win, and that is exactly what the girls did.  We swept the singles side of things, and our only loss in doubles came in a third set super tie-breaker.”

Ellie Colbeck cruised in her first singles match in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.  Ellie’s first serve and forehand were spot on tonight.  She did a nice job of dictating play and worked her way into the net to finish points effectively.  Madison Adnerson also found herself in a fairly routine win at 6-2, 6-2.  Madison showed great patience tonight.  When she waits on the point to find the right time to attack with her forehand, she has been very effective as of late.  She did a great job of that tonight.  The match of the night came at third singles for the Otters tonight.  Isabella Abrahams found herself down after dropping a close first set 6-4.  Bella has the staying power to outlast people.  She can work a match and is not afraid of having to go the distance, which is what she did tonight.  Bella´s match lasted two and a half hours.  That was two and a half hours of hustle and grind.  She did a great job of staying the course and using what was working to win.  Her lob game was fantastic tonight.  Her opponent was evenly matched, but Bella found ways to win the big points and stay focused.  This was an impressive win for her against a very consistent player.  Amber Anderson also brought home a close win at fourth singles for the Otters.  Amber battled back and forth sets with some handwork on her groundstrokes tonight.  Her 7-5, 7-6(3) match was a really good win for her.

In doubles action, Ava Weber and Leila Nasri played a nail-biter at first doubles.  The duo dropped the first set 6-4, before coming back to take the second set 6-4, forcing a decisive third set.  With the team match already decided, the third set was played out as a super tie-breaker (frist to ten by two).  The duo ended up dropping the breaker, but were right in the mix tonight.  At second doubles, Hannah Prody and Ashtyn Lill cruised through their first set 6-0, before things got a little more complicated.  A mix of DL stepping it up and Ashtyn and Hannah throwing in some unforced errors made this set much closer than we would have liked.  However, Hannah and Ashtyn did a nice job of getting back to cleaner and fundamental tennis to earn the set in a tie-break.   The third doubles team of Paige Pearson and Mackenzie Krava won their first set 7-6 with a tie-break score of 13-11.  It was a wild set.  It wasn´t the cleanest tennis we´ve seen them play, but sometimes it´s just as impressive to win when things aren´t going our way.  Paige and Mackenzie cleaned things up nicely to earn the second set 6-1.

“Tonight was just a great night for our girls overall,” concluded Lill.  “It was a great team win and a fun way to end our home season.  We are thrilled to be playing on Thursday in the section 8AA consolation championship.  The match is currently slated for 1:00pm at a neutral site to be determined.  We will play against Rocori.”
