Otter Girls Lose Tough Playoff Battle with DL

The Fergus Falls girls’ soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss at Detroit Lakes on Tuesday night.  The loss knocked the Otters out of the Section 8A playoffs.  The Lakers advance to play Alexandria on Thursday.  The Cardinals were 10-0 winners of Pelican Rapids in their opening round playoff game.

A breakaway goal with 13 minutes left in the first half gave the Lakers a 1-0 advantage.

The Lakers increased their lead to 2-0 off a corner kick with 22 minutes left in the game.

Megan Tosset scored her first varsity goal off a cross from Piper Andrews with 1:48 left in the game.  Soon after the Otters worked the ball deep into DL territory and earned a corner kick with just 24 seconds remaining, but they came up short as time expired.

“These girls showed up tonight and were ready to play,” commented Head Coach Ben Jurgens.  “They played hard and they played for each other.  We were aggressive throughout the game.  As a coaching staff we are honored to have coached these girls.  They represent our school and community so well.  Our team GPA was 3.73 with six players earning a 4.0.  To the seniors, you will be missed, but you left such a positive mark on our program.  The coaches cannot thank you enough.”

Bemidji beat Hillcrest 8-0 and East Grand Forks posted a 6-1 win over Crookston.  Bemidji will travel to East Grand Forks in the other 8A North semifinal matchup on Thursday.
