Wheaton/Herman-Norcross posted a 3-1 (25-10, 25-12, 21-25, 26-24) volleyball victory in Ashby on Thursday night.

“Everyone was so excited to get back to playing volleyball,” exclaimed Head Coach Ann Dreke of the Warriors.  “We found out during the school day that girls could invite two spectators to come to the game.  This added a whole new level of excitement.  We have been practicing for almost a month already so to finally have a game was just awesome.”

Leaders for the Warriors were Ellissa Rinke (17/17 serving, 1 ace, 8 kills, 14 digs), Emily Berger (16/18 serving, 2 aces, 19 set assists), Amanda Lanter (13/15 serving, 3 aces, 15 set assists), Olivia Hasbargen (13/14 serving, 2 aces, 12 digs), Brylie Schultz (16 kills) and Kyah Thomas (12/13 serving).

“The new rules made it feel a bit different,” noted Coach Dreke.  “Not switching sides, no announcing of players, masks on the benches, no good luck handshakes or finishing handshakes, only a few spectators, and separation of players was different but we made it work. We played well.  Our serving was above 90%, and most of our hitters had positive hitting percentages.  Our serve receivers did an excellent job on some tough serves as well.  We have lots to work on and many things to improve.  But I look forward to a healthy and safe season!”

“We began the night with lots of first game jitters but warmed up by the third set,” commented Ashby Head Coach Hayley Stevens. “We were strong from the serving line and our passes were consistent. Wheaton has a big front row attack but mixes in back row hitting so they had threats all around. I was extremely pleased with how the girls communicated and worked together throughout; especially when we were down. It was nice to get back into the gym and see how the chemistry of these ladies came together after multiple changes in the lineup. We have potential all around with strong senior leadership which shines with this group - I cannot wait to see what these girls do this season.”

Leaders for the Arrows were Anissa Heinrich (6 kills, 2 blocks), Cailey Schlosser (15/17 serving, 1 ace, 3 kills), Catherine Koefod (10/10 serving, 2 kills), Celi Nelson (14/14 serving, 1 ace, 7 kills), Madeline Thompson (6/8 serving, 12 digs), Ryleigh Brendmoen (5/5 serving, 5 kills, 2 blocks) and Tarryn Hill (15/16 serving).
