The Willmar Cardinals hosted Fergus Falls in the final regular season girls’ soccer contest on Thursday night.  Willmar led 1-0 at the half and went on to hand the Otters a 3-1 loss.

Fergus Falls tied the game 1-1 midway through the second half.  Ellie Andersen played a beautiful ball up to Piper Andrews and Piper split the defense, drew the keeper to the left and placed the ball into the right side of the net.  Willmar responded with a pair of late goals to provide the margin of victory.

“The effort tonight came in spurts,” said Fergus Falls Head Coach Ben Jurgens.  “But, to be honest. Willmar had effort the entire game.  You’re not going to win games in this conference when you have only a percentage of your team fully committed to being intense and winning the one-on-one battles.  Tonight Willmar pushed us around the field and we took it, never defending our space.”

Fergus Falls will open the playoffs at Detroit Lakes on Tuesday night at 7:00pm.
