The M State Men’s Golf Team recorded a dual met victory over Valley City State at the Detroit Country Club in Detroit Lakes on Monday with a score of 309 for M State and a 312 total for VCSU.  Wyatt Blomseth of the Spartans was the medalist with a 72, one better than Rory Gentzkow of VCSU.  Blomseth made a 5-foot downhill putt on the 18th hole for par to seal the top spot.  It was Blomseth’s second medalist honors of the fall season.

Mike Vall, Jon Vall and Blomseth all shot their lowest round of the Fall. Combining team and individual scores, M State carded 6 scores in the 70’s.

“It was an enjoyable and competitive day of golf as it went down to the wire in both team and individual contests,” commented Head Coach Jason Retzlaff. “Valley City played very well today and we were fortunate to come out on top.  Wyatt Blomseth played some very steady golf for us and really led us.  It was fun watching he and Rory Gentzkow (VCSU) go head to head down the stretch playing for medalist honors. The Vall brothers also played great golf for us today as well.”

Hunter Burnside, Grant Inniger and Carter Justesen all shot rounds of 79, while Drew Schwann came in with an 81 to close out the team scoring.  Competing individually, Jon Vall and Mike Vall finished with rounds of 77 and 78, respectively.

In the women’s competition, Jocelyn Braunberger of Valley City State earned medalist honors with an 84.  M State’s Sara Butler shot a 116.

The Region XIII Championship has been moved to the Spring, due to Covid-19, for the first time in many years.  This dual was the final team competition of the Fall for the Spartans.

“This has been a tremendous group to coach and be with this fall,” said Retzlaff.  “They are very good players but even better young men and women to work with on a daily basis.  We look forward to coming back in the Spring to compete for a National Tournament trip.”
