The Fergus Falls girls’ soccer team had their four game unbeaten streak snapped on Tuesday night as they suffered a 4-2 defeat to the Willmar Cardinals at the Otter Stadium Field.

“We gave up four goals in the first half by allowing fast break, odd player rushes,” reported Fergus Falls Head Coach Ben Jurgens.  “Ironically, much of the first half was played on Willmar’s side of the field with the Otters crashing the net and putting pressure on their keeper.”

The Otters started communicating better in the second have and were abler to move the ball up the field.  Piper Andrews took charge up front and continuously drove to the net.  With 20 minutes left in the game she slid a pass across the slot and Ellie Andersen pounded it home.  With 10 minutes remaining in the game, Haley Kugler won a huge 50/50 ball at midfield, pushing the ball up front and Andrews drove the ball deep up the right side.  “Piper danced with the ball, beating her defender and fired a rocket just inside the far post,” added Jurgens.

“We had chances all night,” continued Coach Jurgens.  “The difference in the first half was that we couldn’t finish them and in the second half the girls took it upon themselves to put the ball in the net.  The loss hurts.  The girls have elevated their game to a point where we expect to win games like this.  It’s a tough loss because we feel like we let this one slip away.”

Fergus Falls will travel to Bemidji on Thursday for a 7:00pm contest.
