Cross Country teams from Ashby/Brandon-Evansville, Lake Park-Audubon and Hawley competed at the Bluestem Amphitheatre in Moorhead on Thursday with Ashby/Brandon-Evansville winning the boys’ varsity race and finishing third in the girls’ varsity race.

“Overall, this was a good second meet,” said A-B-E Head Coach Robert Bosma. “We talk daily about being 1% better in practice and meets and the junior high athletes started the tempo in the meet. On average they improved their times by 2 minutes from last week to this meet. When the varsity runners see the JH runners pushing themselves, it really makes a difference.  This meet had a JV race set aside for the guys and it made a difference, as our guys weren’t chasing a pack, but really went out to compete. I have 10 guys that really compete day in and day out to be on varsity and it was shown in the JV meet. Micah Fossell, Jayden Hoidahl, and Kian Gackle all ran impressive races.”

For the girls’ race, Bosma reported that A-B-E was able to run a complete team. “The girls are still learning how to run in a race, but we saw improvement. Some are battling some injuries, but it was great to see how they fought through discomfort and ran hard. Lucea Wales had a strong first race and showed potential of where she can continue to go. Likewise, Courtney Brethorst pushed herself to drop over 2 minutes of time and is continuing to get better. I look forward to see where these girls can go and how they will help pull the rest of the team along.”

Here are the individual varsity girls’ results for A-B-E.
13. Lucea Wales 25:12.3, 51. Gretchen Bredberg 29:12.5, 52. Courtney Brethorst 29:22.7, 17. Cailey Schlosser 30:04.3, 18. Katlyn Pattrin 31:11.2, 19. Emma Erickson 35:10.8

Hawley
1. Faith Rustad 20:55.3, 2. Lily Olson 20:57.5, 4. Lily Peterson 21:07.5, 6. Ivy Tickel 22:56.7, 8. Piper Myran 23:18.3, 10. Mia Tickel 24:51.0, 12. Kira Thompson 25:06.4

“The varsity guys again had a strong race,” said Bosma. “Last week, we had a plan for Hunter Norby to pace early and learn a little about how to run. This week, I told him to just chase down the pace car. I really wanted to see what part of the race we need to work on and how we need to change. The next couple guys ran as pack for the majority of the race. Wes Siira and Solomon Wales battled last week for placing and it seems that might become a weekly challenge.  Last week, Jaden Norby had a runner pass him at the end of a race and he vowed to not let it happen again. With a couple hundred meters left in the race, he was tested and his competitive nature took over. Jacob Cook, Matson Hoff, and Logan Froemming all had strong finishes.  Both LPA and Hawley had strong runners pushing in the front of the pack, but our guys really used each other to run as a pack. It was great to see them rely on each other in this race.”
