A dominant pitching performance by Matt Geislinger (9IP, 11K, 1BB, 4H, 0R) and some poor fielding (5 errors) by Fergus Falls, led the Watkins Clippers to a 6-0 victory over the Hurricanes on Sunday in the Class C State Amateur Baseball Tournament at Milroy Yankee Field.

A four-run first inning got Watkins on the road to victory.  Kevin Kramer led off with a double and moved to third base on a ground out.  Geislinger singled home Kramer and following a strikeout Geislinger moved up to third base on a base hit by Carter BlockDan Berg reached on an error with Geislinger scoring, then Block and Berg executed a double steal with the throw from the catcher going into left field, allowing Block to score and Berg to advance to third.  Heath Kramer reached on another error, bringing Berg across the plate.

The Clippers scored their other two runs in the fourth.  Kevin Kramer led off with a single and stole second base.  The throw to second went into center field and Kramer took third.  Lincoln Haugen walked and Kramer scored on a wild pitch to make it a 5-0 game.  Geislinger then singled Haugen to second base and Brendon Ashton brought Haugen home with a base hit.

Leaders for Watkins were Kevin Kramer (2-6, 2B, 2R, SB), Geislinger (3-5, R, RBI) and Berg (3-5, R).

The Hurricanes were led by Tosten Mann (2-4), Dan Revering (1-3) and Mitch Porter (1-1).  Eric Hinnenkamp (6IP, 6K, 0BB, 6H, 0R) pitched well in relief of starter Pete Gaustad (3IP, 4K, 2BB, 9H, 6R, 3ER).

“Geislinger pitched his second complete game shutout of the tournament, shutting down our bats with a blazing fastball, pinpoint control and a good change-up,” said Head Coach Davy Johnson of the ‘Canes.  “We threatened in the third on a Revering single and a walk to Jack Hiedeman with one out, but a strikeout and a line out ended the threat.  In the ninth, pinch-hitter Mitch Porter singled to lead off and Mann singled with one out but a pop out and a ground out ended the threat and the game.”

The Hurricanes finished the season with an overall record of 14-4.
