The Fergus Falls Hurricanes claimed the Region 16C Championship on Saturday with a 9-7 win over the Alexandria Black Sox at Fireman’s Field in Carlos.  Both teams now advance to the Class C State Amateur Baseball Tournament in Springfield and Milroy.  Fergus Falls will receive a first round bye.

Alexandria beat Long Prairie, 8-7 on Friday night, scoring four runs in the bottom of the ninth to steal the victory.  They then eliminated Osakis, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon, setting up the championship game against top-seeded Fergus Falls.

Winning pitcher Darin Stanislawski (6IP, 6K, 3BB, 6H, 3R, 1ER) came on in relief of starter Pete Gaustad in the fourth inning.

Alexandria struck first as Chris Curry led off the game with an infield single, was sacrificed to second and scored on a Travis Krueger single.  Fergus Falls pulled even in the bottom of the first on a lead-off double by Alex Hensch and a run-scoring single by Stanislawski.

The Black Sox regained the lead in the top of the second on a double by Parker Revering leading off the inning and a single by Mitch Thompson.  A 3-run bottom of the second put Fergus Falls back on top, 4-2.  One-out singles by Alex Hexum, Jack Hiedeman and Hensch loaded the bases.  A grounder to third base off the bat of Thomas Bosek led to a force out of Hiedeman at third, allowing Hexum to score.  An errant throw to first base advanced Hensch and Bosek to second and third.  Both base runners were brought home by a Tosten Mann single.

Alexandria knotted the score with a pair of runs in the top of the third.  Sam Helgeson led off with a single and took second on an errant throw.  After a ground out, Matthew Carlsen singled Helgeson to third base.  Carlsen then stole second and both runners came in to score on a base hit by Revering.  A Sean McGuire home run leading off the bottom of the third once again gave Fergus Falls a lead at 5-4.

Two more runs in the bottom of the sixth increased the Hurricanes lead to 7-4.  Hiedeman reached on an error and was bunted to second base.  He scored on a double by Bosek and Stanislawski then plated Bosek with another two-base hit.

Blake Stockert’s two-out solo home run cut the lead to 7-5 in the top of the eighth, however, in the bottom of the inning Bosek reached on an infield single and scored on a triple by Mann.  After a ground out, McGuire singled home Mann to make it a 9-5 lead for Fergus Falls.

Alexandria mounted a ninth-inning rally as Curry delivered a lead-off single, Krueger singled with one out and Carlsen reached on an error with Curry scoring.  After a pop out, Revering doubled in Krueger but Carlsen was thrown out at home to end the game.

The Hurricanes were led at the plate by Hensch (3-4, 2R, 2B, SB, sacrifice bunt), Bosek (2-5, 3R, 2B, 2RBI), Mann (2-4, R, 3B , 3RBI), Stanislawski (2-4, 2B, 2 RBI) and McGuire (2-5, R, HR, 2RBI).

Curry (4-5, 2R) and Revering (3-5, 2 2B, 3RBI) led the Black Sox attack.

Alex Hensch was named the Region 16C MVP.

Fergus Falls drafted Shane Trattles from Sauk Centre, Eric Hinnenkamp from Long Prairie and Nick Lindberg from Frazee/Vergas for the State Tourney, while Alexandria drafted Dylan Haskamp from Sauk Centre, Kilar Zimmel and Carter Rost from Osakis.
