Thomas Bosek (8IP, 7K, 2BB, 5H, 0R) and Pete Gaustad combined on a 7-hit shutout Sunday as the Fergus Falls Hurricanes claimed a 6-0 victory over the Osakis Hawks in a State Qualifier Game. Bosek improved his season record to 4-0 with the win.
Fergus Falls put their first run on the board in the third inning when Alex Hensch drew a two-out walk, stole second and scored on a Bosek double. The ‘Canes added three more runs in the fourth with Darin Stanislawski and Sean McGuire getting things started with back-to-back singles. Gaustad was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. After Dan Revering hit into a fielders’ choice with Stanislawski being forced out at home, Alex Hexum delivered a single, plating McGuire. Jack Hiedeman then drove home Gaustad with a sacrifice fly. Hensch reached on an error with Revering scoring. The final two runs of the day came in the seventh with Stanislawski knocking in Hensch and McGuire driving home Tosten Mann.
Hensch (2-4, 2R, 2SB, BB), Stanislawski (2-5, RBI), McGuire (2-4, R, RBI) and Gaustad (1-3, 2B, R) were the leading hitters for Fergus Falls.
Leaders for Osakis were Drew Fearing (2-3, BB) and Kilar Zimmel (2-3, BB).
“We continue to pitch well and play good defense,” said Fergus Falls Manager Davy Johnson. “For the second game in a row our outfielders threw out a runner attempting to take an extra base and the infielders turned double plays to snuff out rallies. In the last two games our pitchers have thrown 14 inning and not allowed a run.”
Other games Sunday saw Long Prairie eliminate Vergas, 11-1 and Alexandria eliminate Sauk Centre, 11-3.
Long Prairie and Alexandria will square off at 8:00pm Friday in Carlos with the winner moving on to play Osakis at two o’clock Saturday afternoon in a State Qualifier Game. The winner of that game will face the Hurricanes at 5:00pm Saturday in Carlos to determine the seeding order of the two state qualifiers.
