Breckenridge’s season came to an end in a 6-4 loss to Barnesville at the Lake Region Conference Senior Babe Roth Tournament. Breck outhit Barnesville 12-5 but Breckenridge Coach Kevin Hiedeman stated, “we had 3 mistakes on the bases and committed 5 errors in the field which was very uncharacteristic of this team and the way we’ve been playing.”

“You have to tip your hat to Barnesville,” Hiedeman continued, “they played a good game and were very aggressive on the bases, and made the plays they needed to make and tonight we just didn’t. We made some mistakes tonight that we haven’t made all year. That doesn’t take away from the fact that we feel very fortunate to have played 23 games and had a spectacular season. Given the current environment we are in, I feel like it was a gift to have the season that we did.”

Brecekenridge scored a single run in the opening inning, but catcher Jack Wahl of Barnesville gunned down a runner on a steal attempt and Matt Haugrud (5IP, 8H, 3ER, 3K) pitched out of a jam to thwart a bigger inning for Breck.  Barnesville then posted 4 runs in the second on a couple of hits and two Breck errors.  Adam Tonsfeldt’s sacrifice fly was dropped and in addition to a run scoring, the inning stayed alive and Barnesville tacked on 3 additional runs before the inning was over, taking a 4-1 lead.  Breck scored a single run in the second but Haugrud and the Barnesville defense would not allow another run for the next three inning, while posting single runs in the third and fourth innings to make it a 6-2 game.  Breck bunched two singles and a double together in the sixth, knocking Haugrud out of the game.  Sam Askegaard (2IP, 0R, 1K) pitched the final two innings to earn the save, but not without some last inning drama.  With two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, right field Blake Torfin ran down a fly ball in deep right center for the final out.

With the win Barnesville advances to the semifinal round of the MN Lakes Region Senior Babe Ruth Tournament where they will face DGF, the #2 seed, on Saturday afternoon.  Twin Valley/Ulen-Hitterdal upset top-seeded Ada earlier in the day and will play Ashby in the other semifinal contest at 11:00am Saturday in Pelican Rapids.  The two winners will clash for the championship.

Breckenridge will lose 3 super seniors - Jeremy Stack, Max Johnson and Jake Wendorff. “These guys were instrumental in our success the last few years and will be greatly missed. Jack Aigner, Carson Hought, Jonah Friederichs, Ty Piechowski, Andrew Teberg, Derrick Zietlow, Emmit Vig, Brayden Wahl and Carter Haugen also played their last game in a Breckenridge uniform. Not only were these guys great baseball players but they were all great teammates and made the dugout experiences and the season as a whole a lot of fun. Lots of memories were created and no one can take that away!  Vig, Wahl and Haugen are eligible to return again next year if they choose.”

Hiedeman added, “Thank you to Jason Beyer and Jon Hegge for helping coach this team. Thanks to a great group of parents who were nothing but supportive all year. I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to coach such a great group of guys.”
