Fergus Falls hosted the Moorhead Blues on Tuesday night at Legion Field. Both games went into extra innings, making for lots of exciting baseball on a beautiful July night.

Game 1 Fergus Falls 5 Moorhead 10 (8 innings)
Jaydon Ollila started on the mound for Fergus and went 5IP, 11H, 5 R, 4ER, 3BB, 6K, no decision. Carter Thielke came in relief with runners on first and second in the 6th inning and nobody out, (3IP, 4H 5 R, 1ER, 3BB, 1K) Loss.

Leading hitters for Fergus Falls were Brock Kotschevar (2-4, RBI), Arik Heacox (1-4, HR, RBI) and Ollila (1-4, 3RBI).

Fergus jumped ahead early with 4 runs in the first inning on 2 hits and 2 Moorhead errors. “Jaydon worked ahead in the count with strike one often,” said Head Coach Trevor Larson. “He also made some nice 2 strike pitches that Moorhead did a nice job on by putting it in play.”

Arik Heacox launched a solo shot well over the left field fence in the 4th. Fergus wouldn’t get another hit until the 7th inning.

Moorhead in the 8th inning scored 5 runs on 2 hits and 2 Fergus errors. Fergus would threaten but not push across the tying run.

Game 2 Fergus Falls 9 Moorhead 8
Mike Maanum started on the mound and threw the ball very well ( CG, 8IP, 11H, 8R, 2ER, 0BB, 3K) Win.

The game started very ugly for Fergus Falls with two straight infield errors which led to 4 Moorhead runs. Mike Maanum settled in and threw strikes early and often with his curve ball.

Fergus Falls scored 2 runs in the bottom of the first on a lead-off single by Thielke, followed up by singles by Abel Aho and Brock Kotschevar.

Fergus would tie the ball game at 5-5 with a two run rally. Singles by Michael Wiederich, Arik Heacox and Ian Stumbo in the 4th inning.

Fergus took a 6-5 lead into the 7th inning. Moorhead took a 7-6 lead with a HBP, a single and a lost fly ball in the outfield.  Fergus would rally to tie the game and send it into extras once again. Kotschevar singled to lead off the bottom half of the 7th.  Heacox followed with a single of his own to put runners on first and second and nobody out. Wiederich hit into a fielders’ choice 5-4 put out, leaving runners at first and third and 1 out. Ian Stumbo put together a great at bat, capping it off with a single to right to tie the game at 7-7. Moorhead would escape further damage sending the game into extras.

Moorhead scored a run in their half of the 8th on 1 error and a double. Mike Maanum did a nice job of limiting Moorhead to one run.

Thielke led off with a sharp single to center, Aho singled to the infield, the throw was off target at first allowing the runners to advance to second and third. Nic Pearson hit a sacrifice fly to right field to tie the game at 8-8. Brock Kotschevar singled sharply over the second basemen to walk off the Moorhead Blues 9-8.

“Mike Maanum showed a lot of guts and maturity on the mound today,” noted Larson. “He didn’t let the errors or bad breaks around him get him down. He went after guys early and had a nice breaking ball that he was throwing for strikes. I’m very proud of the teams’ effort tonight. There were multiple times where we could have let our heads hang, but they didn’t. Guys were excited to play tonight with each other and it showed.”

Fergus Falls plays at Parkers Praire on Thursday at 5 and 7pm.
