Breckenridge defeated Wahpeton 7-3 in their annual 4th of July game at John Randall Field in Wahpeton on Saturday. Breckenridge improves their record to 2-0 with the win.

Breckenridge outhit Wahpeton 14-3 and that was the key to the game. “We lost some opportunities on the bases - we had 3 outs on the bases - two of them were mental mistakes and one was just a nice play by Wahpeton at the plate,” reported Breckenridge Head Coach Kevin Hiedeman. “We definitely had more opportunities than what the score reflects.”

Carter Haugen started on the mound and pitched the first 2 1/3 innings giving up two hits, walking 4 batters, striking out one and giving up one run.

Connor Twidwell did a great job coming in relief again tonight pitching 3 2/3innings,” noted Hiedeman. “He walked a batter and struck out a batter and did a really good job keeping Wahpeton’s hitters off balance.”

Jace Hegge pitched the final inning giving up 2 runs on one hit and one walk and one strikeout.

Offensively Breckenridge was led by Brayden Wahl picking up three hits on the night. Max Johnson, Emmit Vig, Jeremy Stack and Ty Piechowski each had two hits. Carson Hought, Jonah Friederichs and Jake Wendorff each picked up a hit.

“Defensively we were okay for having this be early in our year,” added Hiedeman.  “Carson Hought made a great play in left field and you have to tip your hat to catcher Jack Aigner. He’s done a phenomenal job behind the plate calling pitches, blocking balls and throwing out runners. It was a fun night and we walked away with a win. We’re going to need to get better though, to compete in the Minnesota Lakes Cconference.”

Breckenridge travels to Hawley on Wednesday night.
