The Breckenridge Senior Babe Ruth team won their Lake Region Conference opener on Tuesday with a 4-2 win over Barnesville.

The game was scoreless until the top of the third inning when Emmit Vig reached base on a 2-out single and scored on a double by Jeremy Stack to give Breckenridge a 1-0 lead.  Breckenridge added another run in the top of the fourth when Carson Hought reached on a walk and ended up scoring on a single by Collin Roberts.

Carter Haugen started on the mound for Breckenridge and sailed through the first three innings striking out three batters and giving up only one hit, but he struggled in the bottom of the fourth inning as he walked the bases loaded with no one out.  Connor Twidwell came on in relief.  Barnesville mustered a couple of hits to pick tie the game at 2-2.

Breckenridge broke the tie by scoring two runs in the top of the sixth.  Carson Hought led off the inning with a single.  Jared Aamold laid down a sacrifice bunt moving Hought into scoring position.  Collin Roberts picked up his second hit of the day with a double scoring Hought.  Ty Piechowski reached on an error and Max Johnson singled to score Roberts.

Twidwell picked up the win, pitching the remaining three innings and recording three strikeouts.

“I’ve only had a couple of practices with the kids, but they were two great practices,” commented Head Coach Kevin Hiedeman of Breckenridge.  “We worked on a lot of things and got a lot of stuff done.  Overall I thought our pitching was great tonight other than one blimp in the fourth.  We played pretty good defense and executed well as we ended up beating a pretty good Barnesville team.  It was great to be back on the field tonight.  There were a lot of people at the game and it was very competitive.  We were able to squeak out a win and it was nice to be back playing summer baseball.”

The next game for Breckenridge is Saturday against Wahpeton.  They will return to conference play next week.
