Verndale senior Sarah Sharelle Barrett played volleyball for the Pirates and picks Psychology and Science as her favorite classroom subjects.  Barrett is planning on attending Crown College where she will obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing within the next three years.

“One of my favorite sports memories was in the fall of 2018,” recalled Barrett.  “It was Verndale versus Henning and we were in the fifth set of the match.  We were neck-and-neck, and our team pulled together, had fun, and won.  On the game winning point I tipped the ball to an open spot and the whole team cheered wildly together!  It was a great game because we all worked together, everyone did well, and we all had fun.”

Volleyball Coach Alicia Strayer said, “Sarah Barrett is a phenomenal athlete, but more importantly individual. She has expressed so much support and kindness to her teammates and peers. We have always enjoyed having her in our program. She shines a light on our team and lightens the mood at any moment. Sarah has worked hard through her academics and athletics. She made tremendous growth throughout her athletic career, and will be greatly missed!”

“Through my involvement in sports I have learned to prioritize and not procrastinate,” noted Barrett.  “I have also learned how to work with many different types of people.  This spring I have been enjoying more time at home to work on college classes and complete by AA Degree.”

Her favorite quote is, “Show respect, even to people who don’t deserve it; not as a reflection of their character, but as a reflection of yours.”  Barrett adds, “I am not sure who said this quote, but I like it so much because many times in sports I have had to show respect to people even when they did not deserve it.”
