Carter Aakre has had a lot of teammates in his high school sports career, probably more than most student-athletes.  The primary reason for that is the fact that he participated in four different sports at Perham High School, competing in football, basketball, track and field and cross country.

“Carter was new to football his senior year,” said Head Coach Kyle Knutson.  “He contributed to our defensive backfield.  He was a very hard worker.”

“Sports has taught me how to work hard, that sometimes things just don’t go your way, how to set goals and pursue them, and finally, that you have to  enjoy the journey because it can be cut short an any time,” shared Aakre.

Carter says the 28-0 season experienced by the Perham basketball team this past winter is his top sports memory.  Unfortunately, the Yellowjackets were unable to attempt to complete a perfect season due to the cancellation of the Section championship game and state tournament.

Cross Country Coach Jeff Morris said, “Carter Aakre is one of a kind. He is passionate, hard-working, fun, enthusiastic, full of joy, and most importantly full of energy. Having Carter as an athlete in cross country and in the classroom in AP Calculus you see that he takes joy in working hard regardless of what he is doing. I love that the switch for Carter is always on. There are not off days with Carter and I am super excited to see all that you accomplish.”

His favorite school subjects were Math and Chemistry.  Carter is planning on attending the University of Wisconsin-River Falls where he will major in Chemical Engineering and is hoping to compete in a lot of intramural sports.

“Carter is one of the hardest workers I have ever had,” said Head Track and Field Coach Mike Peterson.  “He puts forth so much effort, things just go his way.  He has been a blast to get to know and root for.”

“This spring I have continued to work out every day, doing school work, and I’ve started working again,” said Aakre.

His favorite quote comes from Herb Brooks who said (in my edited version): “When you put on that jersey, you represent yourself and your teammates, and the name on the front is a lot more important than the one on the back.”
