Breckenridge high school senior James Finkral found time to compete in quite a variety of sports with the Cowboys, running cross country and track, playing hockey and also experiencing trap shooting.  James will be staying close to home as he plans to attend NDSCS in Wahpeton for a Nursing or Accounting degree.  He will also continue trap shooting at NDSCS.  He listed his favorite high school subjects as Accounting and Math.

A favorite memory is, “Getting the bus stuck every year at Kittson Central when we went there to play hockey.”

“James was a two year captain for our varsity hockey team,” commented Head Hockey Coach Evan McCall. “He’s a very hard worker who comes to practice every day with a good attitude. He is passionate about hockey, he's a great competitor who wants to do what is best for his team. James also took time to volunteer working with kids in our youth program during their practice times. James will be missed next year by his teammates and coaches!”

“Being in sports has made me into a hard worker and showed me what dedication means,” noted Finkral.

James was voted "Leader of the Pack" on our cross country team last year,” reported Coach Larry Lasch.  “He wasn't the most fleet-footed runner, but he pushed the other kids to be their best.  Due to injuries, James didn't play football, his 2nd love, so he joined cross country to stay in shape for hockey, his 1st love.   Yet, he showed up, led our warm-ups and raced his best.  He didn't pull from the front, but he definitely pushed from the back.”

During this uncertain spring James has spent most of his time at his job at the nursing home.

“James decided on Track and Field last season,” recalled Head coach Brad Lindberg.  “He’s one of those athletes that you could assume was going to PR at every meet, which he pretty much did.  James has the great work ethic that definitely gets it done!”

His favorite quote is from actor Denzel Washington who said, “I found that nothing in life is worthwhile unless you take risks, nothing.”
