New York Mills senior Brittany Johnson, who participated in volleyball, basketball and softball for the Eagles, says winning back-to-back state softball titles in 2017 and 2018 is her top sports memory.

Coach Bryan Dunrud, who coached Brittany in both basketball and softball, always knew what he was getting from her on the court or in the field, “Brittany is an extremely hard worker that hustles and gives 100 percent all of the time. In basketball Brittany was often asked to guard the other teams’ best perimeter player full court and take her out of the game. Brittany has worked extremely hard to be in top physical condition and was coming into her own with her offensive game as well before her leg injury. Brittany also was a total team player and would do whatever it would take for the team to be successful. In softball, Brittany was asked to play both 2nd base and outfield and we often used her speed on the bases and intelligence to give us an advantage. Brittany was expected to take over a big role on the softball team prior to the injury and was ready to have a breakout season.”

Her favorite high school subject was math, because as she says, “Math always challenges me and there is always something new to learn.”

Brittany plans on attending Concordia College in Moorhead this fall with a double major in Business Administration and Management and Finance.

Here’s what her volleyball coach, Tammy Olson said, “Brittany has been a quiet leader on our team for the past few years.  She leads by example, each and every day she comes in and works very hard and never complains.  She stepped up in the off-season being one of our first Mills athletes to start our new speed and agility program.  Brittany was a Defensive Specialist for our team because of her quickness and her floor communication. She knew the game and communicated it to the rest of her teammates even when she wasn’t on the court.  She was always helping out the hitters where there was an open spot on the court.”

“Sports has taught me a lot through the years,” said Johnson.  “It’s taught me how to work hard, be a good teammate, and be proactive with completing my school work.  This spring I’ve been focusing on all of the good things we have accomplished through the years.”

Her message to underclassman is, “Treasure and be grateful for every moment because you never know when it may end.”
