West Central Area senior Kaylyn Ulrich was involved in volleyball, basketball, and track and field for the lady Knights.  Here favorite sports memory came in March when the West Central Area girls’ basketball team advanced to the Section 6A finals before falling to Henning at Concordia College in Moorhead.  “Nothing can match making it to the section finals my senior year, with the most supportive fans right next to us.”

“Kaylyn Ulrich had the best game in one of our biggest games of the season,” said Head Girls Basketball Coach Eric Schoenbauer.  “She gave us the ability to give some players a rest on defense by her intense ball pressure and athleticism.  She was a team first player and she really found her niche that made us the team we wanted to become.  Her leadership was invaluable to us and her selfless nature guided us in the right direction.  Good basketball player and a great person that people gravitate to.”

Ulrich, whose favorite high school subject was English, will be majoring in Elementary Education at Minnesota State University – Moorhead.

“Kaylyn is one of those athletes that really blossomed her senior year,” observed Volleyball Head Coach Missy Foslien.  “She seemed to recommit herself to go hard and give it all she had this year and showed up for every single open gym, camp, summer practice or tournament we had for volleyball.  She had the best vertical on our team and we often kidded with her about it as she is so short! Kaylyn was one of our best server’s this past volleyball season and played outside hitter for us. Kaylyn was named captain this year and was so good at connecting with teammates and coaches. My favorite memory of Kaylyn this year was not in volleyball but in the Section basketball playoff game versus Henning, when she couldn’t miss and had the game of her life! She was so fun to watch! I wish her the best, she is one of a kind and will be missed next season!”

“Being in sports has taught me many life lessons and brought me so many amazing friendships and memories,” said Ulrich.  “With no spring sports I have been working, finishing school work, and helping with my younger siblings.  I am trying my best to stay active and be outside in the sunshine!”

Kaylyn has this advice for underclassmen, “Truly be thankful for every opportunity.  I know it’s a cliché’.  I never wanted to hear it either, but there comes a time when there are no opportunities left.  Enjoy it!”
