Underwood High School senior Amy Worum participated in both softball and trap shooting during her high school sports career.

“For trap, my favorite memory was shooting my first 24/25,” said Worum.  “I was so close, but nothing ever beat that feeling of almost having a perfect round.  In softball, there have been a lot of memories and it is hard to choose one.  My favorite would have to be playing my first varsity game as a freshman.  I got pulled up and put into a position I had never played before (first base), and ended up playing there my whole high school career.  I had errors, but it was an experience that earned me my spot on the team that year and led me to having one of the best seasons stat-wise of my career.  I learned that it is always good to be a versatile player and it taught me to try my best in whatever position coach puts me in.”

Amy is planning on attending NDSU in the fall and majoring in pharmacy.  Her favorite high school subjects were, “anything math related, especially statistics!  I also enjoyed Physics, Chemistry, Anatomy, Band/Choir and Phy-Ed.”

“Amy began her career with OTC softball as a pitcher and a catcher,” recalled Head Coach Jan Eitzen.  “But, when a need arose for someone to play first base, Amy was our first choice because she can stop anything.  She quickly proved to a solid defender and an anchor to our infield.  Amy had years of strong performance numbers at the plate and was a confident base runner.  Considered a leader by her teammates and her coaches, she was a team captain for two years.  Her hard work, commitment to the team and dedication to her sport marks Amy’s softball career.  Amy was a joy to coach and will be missed in many ways.”

“Sports have been with me since I was about 5 years old when I started playing T-ball,” noted Worum.  “I was hooked from then on and put in a lot of work.  Sports have taught me to be dedicated to my studies and my team.  At one point I was in volleyball, basketball, softball and trap shooting, and during that time I learned how to manage my time between my studies and my sports.  Most important, I was impacted so much by the coaches I had throughout the years.  During my sophomore year I was sick almost the whole season and trying to play through it, and my senior year I had ankle surgery.  The two coaches I had for softball were both always right there for support.  They would always check in to make sure I was doing alright, and I knew I could always rely on them to be there.  My teammates have impacted me more than they know by being my family outside of my family.  With OTC being a co-op I met so many new lifelong friends who I got to play with the last six years.  Sports have impacted me in so many positive ways!”

As for missing out on school and softball this spring, “I won’t lie, it has been rough.  I had ankle surgery this fall and it was going to be hard to ready by spring for softball.  I worked hard all winter, and amazingly, was ready by our first and only week of practice.  It hurt to hear that both seasons were canceled because I had worked so hard all winter to be ready.  Also, it was my senior year, and I was very excited to try and be the best I could be.  With sports and school, I miss my friends, teacher and coaches.  I love them all so much, and it had been very hard to be away from them and to not say farewell properly.  I have been going out and hitting softball for my dog to help fill the void, and I plan to go shoot some clays soon.  I have looked back through the pictures form the years, and it helps for sure.  I loved every minute I got to play and I sure miss it a lot.  Underclassmen, enjoy the time with your classmates and don’t take them or your teachers for granted.  Cherish all the memories within your heart and play your heart out!”
