Riley Berg is finishing up her senior year at Pelican Rapids High School.  Riley spent her fall as a member of the Vikings volleyball team and was hoping to participate in her final track and field season this spring.

“My top sports memory came my ninth grade year after competing in the high jump at the Section meet,” recalled Berg.  “I didn’t know if I had qualified for state until they called my name to go to the podium!”

Head Track Coach John Peter described Riley in this manner, “Riley has been a steady competitor for our squad and a focused and hard worker over the past 4-5 years in our team.  She was a regular face in our crew that made it to the State meet over the past few years and is fantastic at working with our younger kids as they were learning the High Jump event.  Specifically, her leadership last year, when her event coach missed a portion of the season for health reasons, was impressive as she stepped up and led the group thru many workouts.”

Berg is planning on attending Hamline University to study business and continue her track and field career.  Her major will be in Business Management.  Science and Math have been her favorite high school subjects.

“Being involved in sports brought me closer with friends from other grades that I wouldn’t have been friends with otherwise,” said Berg.  “I wanted to be a role model for the younger girls to show them what an underdog could do.”

"Riley Berg has been a varsity player for 3 years and was a captain for us this year," noted Head Volleyball Coach Heidi Isaman.  "Riley is a very versatile player and has played almost every position for us over her career. She set for us at the JV level.  Then played middle, outside, and finally added back row as a varsity player. Riley is very athletic and when challenged is capable of making big plays. Her versatility and athleticism made her an asset to our team."

Missing out on the spring track and field season has been hard on Riley, “I miss bonding with Anna and Mollie while waiting to jump.  I also miss my track coaches.  Not only were they my coaches, they made me feel valued and they helped me through day-to-day problems.”

Her message to underclassmen is, “your senior year truly does fly by.  Take all the opportunities you get and don’t take anything for granted.”
