The Underwood Rockets will begin the fall football and volleyball seasons minus two long-time head coaches.  The husband and wife coaching duo of Chuck Ross and Diane Ross have resigned their coaching positions.  Ryan Hendrickson, who served as an assistant coach in football and Breck Grove, a volleyball assistant have been named as their replacements.

Chuck Ross coached the Underwood football team from 1998 to 2019, compiling a 142-94 record while leading the Rockets to 3 conference championships, 2 sub-district championships and 7 section titles which resulted in trips to the state playoffs.

Diane Ross coached the volleyball team from 1997 to 2019, finishing with a 497-200 record with the Rockets.  Her career record as a head volleyball coach including teams other than Underwood is 706 wins and 302 losses.  Under her direction the Rockets won 12 Little Eight Conference titles, 10  sub-section championships and 7 section titles.

“As an AD and fellow coach, they will be missed,” stated Activities Director Brian Hovland.  “I have learned a lot from both of them through the years.  The programs that they have built in Underwood have been outstanding.  With that being said I believe they have done a great job of transitioning out and leaving the programs in great hands.  Both Coach Grove and Hendrickson have shown that they are ready to take over these very successful programs.”

Hovland, who served as an assistant coach to Ross in football for many years, was to be awarded the Butch Nash Award last weekend at the Minnesota High School Football Coaches Association banquet.

“The Butch Nash is the epitome of the ideal assistant coach,” said Ross.  “Total loyalty, coaching competency, outstanding rapport with players and fellow coaches, integrity beyond reproach and many years of dedicated service to a worth profession are the qualities that are the criteria for this award.”
