With seven returning players from a year ago, the West Central Area boys’ golf team is poised for improvement in 2020.  The 25 boys out for golf in grades 7 through 12 is the highest number of participants for Head Coach Kraig Hunter since he took over the program 14 years ago.

“Last year we were young and inexperienced,” said Hunter.  “We have seven players who rotated at our top six varsity spots last season returning, so they now have a year of varsity experience.  We are expecting a big improvement in our team scores and in the conference standings this year.  We also have a couple of newcomers to the team who are not newcomers to the sport.  Grant Beuckens and Bret Duncan have played a lot of golf in the summers so there will be a lot of competition for the top six spots.”

Returning letter winners include seniors Jacob Warde and Declan Johnson, juniors Tate Christenson (All-Conference 2019) and Trenton Getzlaff, sophomore Devin Benson, freshman Peyton Hanson and eighth-grader Mitch Dewey.

“In order to be a good golfer, you can’t just be good at one or two things,” noted Hunter.  “You must have a complete game as well as a strong mental mind frame.  So, if we get to practice, we will work on being good at all parts of the game with a heavy emphasis on short game shots and maintaining a good attitude.”

The Knights are in the Quad County Conference which is comprised of Ashby, Underwood, Hillcrest, Rothsay, OTC, Long Prairie-Browerville, Ortonville, Wheaton, CGB, Pillager and WCA.

West Central Area is new to Section 6A, moving over from 5A this year.  Coach Hunter said, “Being new to the section, I don’t know a lot about the teams further north, but OTC, Underwood and Hillcrest should all be strong in our conference and section.”

Ben Johnson will serve as Junior High Coach.
