The Rothsay girls’ basketball team tied for fourth place in the Little Eight Conference this year, which is the highest finish in many years.  The lady Tigers also won 11 games this year, the most since any Rothsay girls’ team since the year 2000.  Head Coach Anita Heier has announced her team awards for the just completed season.

“Over the past few years, we have talked extensively about getting these kids to believe in themselves and believe in their teammates,” said Heier. This years’ team really took a step forward and started to believe in each other and it showed as the season went on. I am so proud of these girls for going out every night and competing and bringing some excitement to the girls’ basketball program. These girls were fun to watch with their up and down style and high scoring games. They set a record this season for Rothsay girls’ basketball averaging 55.9 points per game and also broke the record for 3 pointers made in a season with 150.”

Two girls received All-Conference recognition in the Little Eight, seniors Jayna Gronewold and Jenna Fabre.  Gronewold, who was named LEC MVP, led the conference in points per game (21.8), rebounds per game (8.7) and steals per game (4.4).  Fabre averaged 8.8 points per game and was in the top ten in the LEC in free throw percentage.

“I want to take a minute to first recognize our seniors this year who did such a great job keeping this group of girls focused and together throughout the season,” added Heier. “Jayna Gronewold and Jenna Fabre are such great kids and even better leaders in our school and basketball program and we wouldn’t have had as much fun and success as we did this year without the great leadership of these two girls. Thank you Seniors!”

Here are the team awards, complete with comments from Coach Heier.

Most Improved – This award goes to the player who displayed the most improvement over the course of the season. It was fun to watch this player grow and improve with the variety of roles we put her in. She began the season as a role player coming off the bench and ended the season as a starter leading us in rebounds in most games. She continues to improve every time she steps on the floor. She will be so much fun to watch in the Future. Much deserved award winner voted by her teammates.

This years Most Improved goes to Kenadi Carlsrud

Hardest Worker - This award goes to the hardest worker both in practice and in games. She is a difference maker and consistently works hard to improve herself as well as her teammates. This year we gave her the difficult task of pressing our opponent’s full court from start to finish every game. Voted by her teammates.

This years’ Hardest Worker award goes to Grace Lider

Defensive Stopper - This award goes to our most consistent defensive player. This player always matched up with our opponent’s best offensive player, whether it was a guard or a post she was always up for the challenge. She played with a lot of energy and takes a lot of pride in getting stops on defense. Voted on by her teammates

Tiger award – this award goes to a player who works hard every day, always gives 110%, is a team leader, positive attitude, and is very encouraging of other players. Basically, the type of player every coach loves to have in their program. This player was such a great emotional leader for us this year and was constantly encouraging and cheering for others on the floor. Much deserved award voted on by her teammates.
