Hornet Girls Advance to Semifinals with Win Over Fillmore Central

No. 3 seed Henning (29-2) heads to the state semifinals in its first trip to the MSHSL Class A Girls’ State Basketball Tournament with a 69-56 win over Fillmore Central (22-9) in the quarterfinals on Thursday evening at Maturi Pavilion on the campus of the University of Minnesota.

The Hornets will face No. 2 seed Cromwell-Wright on Friday, March 13 at 2 p.m. at Williams Arena in the semifinals.

The game featured five ties and seven lead changes, but all came in the first 11 minutes of play. Trailing by two, 17-15 with 8:12 to play in the first half, Henning scored eight in a row in the next three minutes to claim the largest lead of the game to that point, 25-19. From there, the Hornets never let the Falcons trim it to a one possession game, with Henning carrying an 11-point lead into the break (32-21). They maintained a double-digit margin the rest of the night, although their 24-point lead with 12:46 to go was brought back to a 10-point margin with just over a minute left. Megan Weber led the Hornets with 29 points on sharp-shooting, hitting 6-of-10 from the arc and 8-of-13 from the field while Ellie Dague poured in 22 points, had seven rebounds and five assists. The Hornets shot 51.4 percent (19-37) on the night and buried eight three-pointers at a 50.0 percent clip.

Fillmore Central was led by Kassidy Broadwater’s game-high 30 point effort as she hit 4-of-5 from three and 9-of-16 from the field, adding four steals. Kandace Sikkink added 11 points and eight rebounds. Henning held Fillmore Central to 30.8 percent shooting (16-52) for the game and just 20.8 percent (5-24) in the first half.
