Waseca Girls Hold Vikings to 20% Shooting in 38-22 State Quarterfinal Win

The Pelican Rapids girls’ shot just 20% (7-35) from the field and made only 2-of-17 (11.8%) of their shots from beyond the arc¸ as the Waseca Bluejays held them to just 22 points in a 38-22 Class AA State Quarterfinal victory on Wednesday night at Williams Arena.

The loss was the first of the season for the Vikings who came into the game with a perfect 29-0 record. 

Waseca struggled in the first half, but took a 13-11 halftime lead with an offensive rebound and put back basket at the buzzer by Camryn McQuery.

The Bluejays got their offense going in the second half as Hannah Porter hit 3 of her 4 3-pointers on the way to a game high 12 points. Waseca shot just 26.3% in the first half but made 44% of their second half shots, including 5-of-9 from behind the arc.  Rachel Breck had a team high 9 rebounds to go along with 6 points and Porter collected 7 boards.  Jaden Hiller buried a pair of 3’s for her six points.

Greta Tollefson led the Vikings with 9 rebounds, 10 points, 2 assists and a blocked shot.  Anna Stephenson added 7 points and 4 rebounds.  Abby Syverson came up with 5 steals.

Waseca (25-6) will face top-seeded Rochester Lourdes (28-2) at 6:00pm Friday at Williams Arena in a championship semifinal contest.

Pelican Rapids (29-1) goes up against Concordia Academy (20-10) in a consolation semifinal at 6:00pm Thursday at Concordia University in St. Paul.
