Viking Girls Overcome 13 Point Halftime Deficit to Top Nuggets

The Pelican Rapids girls’ basketball team overcame a 23-10 halftime deficit to hand the Hawley Nuggets a 51-42 loss in the Section 8AA semifinals on Wednesday at Concordia College in Moorhead.  The win ran the Vikings record to 28-0 on the season and advances them to the Section 8AA championship game at 7:00pm Friday against Fergus Falls at Concordia.

Pelican Rapids made only three field goals in the first half, however, they became much more aggressive in the offensive end in the second half as they put 41 points on the board over the final 18 minutes of play.  The Vikings placed three players in double figures, led by Greta Tollefson with 14 and Anna Stephenson with 13.  Maddie Guler added 11.  Tollefson made all eight of her free throw attempts and the Vikings hit 18-of-23 shots from the line.  Pelican Rapids aided their second half comeback by turning the ball over just twice in the half.  They finished with 11 turnovers in the game.

Pelican Rapids trailed 31-18 when they went on a 26-6 run, taking a 44-37 lead.  They took the lead for the first time on a Guler 3-pointer with 5:45 left in the game, making the score 38-37.

Senior Paige Thompson led the Nuggets with 20 points and Kylie Crabtree was also in double digits with 10 points.  Hawley turned the ball over 18 times.

The Nuggets end their season with a record of 22-6.
