Saturday afternoon, the West Central Area Lady Knights traveled to Morris to play the Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley Wolverines in the sub-section 6A semifinals.

The game saw the Lady Knights take an 8-3 lead out of the gates. The Wolverines would battle back and take the lead 14-13, but in the closing moments of the first half the Knights would regain the lead 15-14.  The Second half began and the Knights would string together a run and lead by 9 points.  There was a back and forth battle but the sharp shooting of Hailey Bennett and Brynn Fernholz stretched the lead to 15 points.  Some free-throws and big defensive stops led to the final of 52-32 advancing WCA to the sub-section finals on Wednesday against Hancock.

The Knights were led by Hailey Bennett with 16 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists.  Lexi Bright scored 15 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, had 4 steals and 2 assists.  Brynn Fernholz had 8 points and 2 rebounds.  Elizabeth Rustan had 6 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals.  Teagan Nelson had 2 points and a steal.  Kennedy Ulrich had 2 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists.  Claire Stark had 2 points and 3 rebounds.  Halle Grosz scored her first varsity point, Kaitlyn Hansen had a steal, Kaylyn Ulrich grabbed 2 rebounds and 2 steals,  Halle Foslien had a rebound and Ireland Winter had a steal.

“Tonight was a tale of two halves and thankfully our defense was up to the task when our offense was sputtering,” said West Central Area Head Coach Eric Schoenbauer.  “The second half of the game was possibly our best half of the season and all of the girls provided things that will never show up in the box score, but those little things created our advantage.”

The Wednesday encounter with Hancock will take place at 6:00pm at UM-Morris.
