The Battle Lake girls’ basketball team put up a fierce battle in Hancock, but came up a bit short in the end, losing 50-39 in a Section 6A playoff game on Thursday night.

The Battlers got off to a slow start and fell behind 10-0, but fought to keep it close the rest of the half, trailing 29-17 at the break.  Battle Lake slowly cut into the Owls lead and at the 8:53 mark of the second half, Makenna Tysdal hit a three pointer to cut the lead to five, at 36-31.  On the next possession Grace VanErp also hit a three and the lead was down to only 2 points.  Some timely baskets by the Owls extended the lead back to double digits and Battle Lake wasn’t able to get any closer.

“We played a solid defensive game, but in the end, we just didn't have quite enough scoring to keep pace,” stated Head Coach David Marso of the Battlers.

Leaders for Battle Lake were VanErp with 19 points, Tysdal with7 and Tessa Kortlever with 6.

"The girls played so hard tonight and executed the game plan so well," said Coach Marso. "I am so proud of their hard work this week and all season. It's hard to see the season end, especially for our three seniors, Halie Johnson, Tessa Kortlever and Makenna Tysdal, but it was a last game to be proud of.”

Carlee Hanson and Alexis Staples led Hancock with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Hancock will move on to face Parkers Prairie in a Section 6A quarterfinal contest at 2:45pm Saturday at UM-Morris.
