Cardinals Qualify Nine for State Swimming and Diving Meet

Sartell-St. Stephen scored 491 points to edge out Alexandria (484) for the Section 5A Boys Swimming and Diving Team championship on Saturday at UM-Morris.  The Cardinals qualified nine individuals for the Class A State Meet.

Alexandria had seven first place finishes with Nicolas Welle and Anthony Hoyt each winning two individual events.  Welle was first in the 50 freestyle with a pool record time of 20.97 seconds and won the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.50 seconds.  Hoyt established a pool record time of 4:48.66 in winning the 500 freestyle and also took first in the 200 freestyle (1:45.90).  James Molesworth won the 100 breaststroke (1:01.61), Luca Dauer was first in the 100 butterfly (54.35) and the 400 freestyle relay team of Carter Holm, Torrey Olson-Rodel, Anthony Hoyt and Nicolas Welle won that event with a time of 3:15.83.

Other state qualifiers for the Cardinals included second place finisher Caden Kavanagh (352.05) in diving and the 200 freestyle relay team of Dauer, Logan Tung, Molesworth and Welle.  Qualifying with third place finishes were Olson-Rodell in the 200 IM (2:05.16), Tung in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.35) and Thomas Williams in the 100 backstroke (56.41).  The eight state qualifiers will compete at the State Class A Meet on Friday and Saturday at the U of M Aquatic Center.

Melrose-Sauk Centre was third with 305 points, followed by Bemidji with 231, Park Rapids Area with 179, Fergus Falls with 168, Detroit Lakes with 128, Perham-New York Mills with 81, Thief River Falls with 71 and Morris Area with 45.  The Otters did not qualify any individuals or relay teams for the Class A State Meet.
