Four Goal First Period Carries Cardinals to 7-1 Win

Alexandria jumped out to a 4-0 first period lead and advanced to the Section 6A Boys’ Hockey playoffs with a 7-1 win over Morris-Benson Area on Tuesday night at the Runestone Community Center in Alexandria.

The Cardinals got on the board just seventeen seconds into the game when Joe Westlund scored from Derek Pesta and Andrew Revering.  The home team increased their lead to 2-0 on a goal by Caleb Strong at 4:34, assisted by Westlund.  A goal by Pesta at 7:43 was assisted by Joe Bigger and Strong, giving Alexandria a 3-0 advantage.  They made it 4-0 on an unassisted goal by Jacob Partington at 11:06.

Morris-Benson Area scored at 4:35 of the second when Brady Loge found the back of the net from Reece Kuseske.  Twelve seconds later Pesta scored from Bigger to re-establish the Cardinals four goal lead.  Shane Birkelad scored from Partington and Brennan Lattimer at 10:49 and Alexandria led 6-1.

The final goal of the night was scored by Lattimer at 15:20 of the third.  He was setup by Strong and Pesta.

Landyn James stopped 16-of-17 shots he face and Alexandria put 43 pucks on the Morris-Benson goal.

Alexandria will face Little Falls in the semifinal round of the Section 6A playoffs at 7:00pm Saturday at the MAC in St. Cloud.
