Riley Leabo led Battle Lake with 20 points as the Battlers defeated Hillcrest Lutheran Academy 53-50 in a tightly contested Little Eight Conference boys’ basketball game on Tuesday night in Fergus Falls.

Brennan Amundson added 16 and Brady VanErp had 11 for the Battlers.

“Fun way to start the week,” said Battle Lake Head Coach C.J. Peeters.  “It was a back-and-forth battle.  We would get it up to ten and they would battle back.  Great team effort for our guys on a night we are down two starters.  Young guys stepped up and our leaders held us together throughout the game.”

Hillcrest was led by Ev Gould with 13 and Micah Foss with 11.  Thomas Zwiers and Sam Brumfield 9 and 8 points, respectively.  Zwiers led the Comets with 7 rebounds and 3 steals.  Foss had a team high 4 assists.

"Tough night for us again in the TO department," said Hillcrest Head Coach Ryan Garvin.  "Unofficially we committed another 17 turnovers and some of them very timely killing the momentum we felt like we were building. We struggled from 3 in the first half, which really led to us playing some softer defense than we are capable of and that we need to play in order to be a force to be reckoned with in the playoffs.  At one point late in the second half we were down one and Battle went on a 9-0 run. We showed some guts and toughness and battled back with a chance at the buzzer to tie it up and just came up short.  I'm looking forward to seeing how these young men respond as we finish out with this 3 games in 5 days stretch!"
