The Fergus Falls girls’ hockey team saw their hopes of successfully defending their Section 6A championship end on their home ice on Tuesday night with a 4-2 loss against River Lakes.

“Credit River Lakes, they played their best game at the right time,” commented Fergus Falls Head Coach Tim Lill.  “I’m extremely proud of our effort tonight and throughout the entire season.  We fought through a lot of adversity and learned so much about each other and about teamwork.”

River Lakes struck quickly, scoring just 24 seconds into the game when Brooke Lemke found the back of the net from Tyra Johnson.

In the second period Lemke scored from Kianna Rose at 2:46, giving the Stars a 2-0 lead.  Fergus Falls cut the lead in half at 11:02 of the second when Maddie Hulter scored from Chloe Nelson.  That lead lasted just 19 seconds as River Lakes got their third goal from Brianna Deming, assisted by Bree Griffin.

A goal by Piper Andrews at 1:12 of the third period was assisted by Chloe Nelson and trimmed the Stars lead to 3-2.  An empty net goal by Bree Griffin at 16:48 ended the scoring.

Willmar was a 5-4 winner over Northern Lakes and the top seeded Cardinals will face River Lakes in the Section 6A championship game on Thursday night at the Community Arena in Fergus Falls.
