Hillcrest traveled to Ashby to face the Arrows in a Little Eight Conference boys’ basketball game on Friday night.  The Comets led 40-29 at the half and held on through the second half to record a 61-56 victory.

“Very proud of our guys,” said Hillcrest Head Coach Ryan Garvin. “They did a pretty good job of sticking to the game plan tonight. We handled the Arrows pressure and actually did a better job of dictating the posture of the game on the offensive and defensive end.”

Leaders for Hillcrest were Micah Foss (21 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals), Thomas Zwiers (15 points, 11 rebounds), Sam Brumfield (10 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists) and Ev Gould (10 points, 4 steals, 2 assists).  The Comets hit 47% (26-55) of their field goal attempts.

“Micah Foss stepped up as a leader tonight and we're just so proud of his offensive and defensive effort,” stated Coach Garvin. “Joel Quam, Sam Brumfield, Caden Fischer all played some big minutes in the post tonight that really helped Thomas Zwiers out both on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. I thought our shot selection took a step in the right direction, too.”

Ashby was led by 18 points from Torin Olson, 14 from Jaden Norby and 12 from Noah Johnson.  Norby had his third straight double-double, grabbing 12 rebounds.  The Arrows made 46% (19-41) of their field goal attempts and shot 40% (6/15) of their treys.

“We got off to a slow start as the Comets jumped all over us,” said Ashby Head Coach John Holsten.  “We didn’t guard their dribble penetration at all well.  Our effort improved in the second half and held them to 21 points.  We narrowed the deficit to one possession and actually missed a couple of three-point shot attempts that would have tied the game late.  Congratulations to Ryan and his staff.  Their kids have really improved.”

Hillcrest (6-8) will play at Pelican Rapids on Monday.

Ashby (11-6) has lost three straight games.  They will play at Frazee on Monday.
