Northern Lakes held a 49-35 advantage in shots on goal Friday night as they edged Wadena-Deer Creek 4-3 in a high school boys’ hockey contest at the Breezy Point Hockey Arena.

Northern Lakes took a 1-0 lead at 10:09 of the second period on an unassisted tally by Shane Donovan.

The Wolverines countered with an unassisted goal from Lleyten Pettit at 3:57 of the third to tie the game at 1-1.  Carter Holtzleicer scored from Jakob Ince at 4:16 of the third to put Northern Lakes back on top, 2-1, however, Wadena-Deer Creek pulled even at 2-2 when Connor Davis scored from Dalton Moyer and Cole Woods at 7:06.  The Wolverines gained a one goal advantage at 8:47 when Lleyton Pettit scored again, this time from Daunte Leiran.  Northern Lakes tied the game at 3-3 when Hunter Nybakken tallied an unassisted goal at 13:54 and won the game on a Nybakken goal from Caiden Kjelstrom with just 19 seconds left in the game.

Wadena-Deer Creek goalie Josh Dykhoff was able to turn aside 45 of the 49 shots he faced in the contest, and Northern Lakes goaltender Jeremiah Smythe came up with 32 saves to earn the win.

Wadena-Deer Creek (6-13-1) will travel to St. Cloud to face Cathedral at the MAC on Tuesday night and will return home to host Detroit Lakes on Thursday.
