The Willmar Cardinals scored two goals in each of the three periods on Thursday night in Fergus Falls as they handed the Otters a 6-3 defeat at the Community Ice Arena.

Willmar scored less than a minute into the game to jump out to an early lead with Bailey Olson scoring from Mya Monson.  Four minutes later Madison Garberding scored from Olson to make it a 2-0 Willmar lead.  Fergus Falls got a power play goal from Ellie Andersen, assisted by Maddie Hulter with 5:11 left in the opening period, cutting the Cardinals lead in half and ending the first period trailing 2-1.

Olson’s unassisted goal less than two minutes into the second period increased the Willmar lead to 3-1.  Vivian Karsnia scored from Jadyn Bye with 11:47 left in the second period, trimming the Willmar lead to 3-2 and the Otters then tied the game on a goal by Piper Andrews, setup by Vivian Karsnia.  Tanna Christensen handed Willmar a 4-3 lead after two periods with just one second remaining in the period, assisted by Olson and Brianna Hanson.

Christensen scored a power play goal at 8:15 of the third period, assisted by Garberding and Kessa Mara, giving the visitors a 5-3 lead.  The final goal came with twelve seconds remaining from Monson, who was assisted by Garberding.

“Credit to Willmar, they score consistently when we make mistakes,” said Fergus Falls Head Coach Tim Lill.  “I’m still proud of the fight in my girls.  We will play hard until they kick us out of the rink.”

The Otter girls (9-14) will look to snap their four game losing skid when they host Moorhead on Tuesday night.
