The Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie Raiders put on some miles this past week starting with a quadrangular in Foley on Tuesday and finishing with the Prowler Invitational on Saturday in Thief River Falls.

Tuesday’s quad featured three teams that were in the state tournament last year and another traditional powerhouse program.  The opening round was a rematch from the state consolation semifinal last year and once again BHVPP came away with the victory after a rocky start.  David Revering put us on the board with a decision and Aiden Larson tied it at 6-6 with a decision of his own.  The Gobblers then ran off four straight matches to extend the lead out to 27-6 before the tide turned and the Raiders rallied off the last seven matches with pins from Brock Peterson, Mason Schroeder, Hunter Dean, Gideon Ervasti, Tyler Eggert, Jaden Finck, and Craig Orlando for the 48-27 win.

The middle round matchup was against the Pioneers from Pierz.  Bennet Arceneau sparked the dual with a first period fall and Deagen Captain made it 12-0 with a Forfeit.  Pierz took the next three matches for a 15-12 lead.  However, back to back to back Forfeits from Jason Koehn, Abby Ervasti, and Peterson doubled us up on the Pioneers 30-15.  Schroeder added a fall and Dean added a tech fall to put the dual out of reach at 41-15.  Pierz took the next two matches but Koal Plautz’s pin and Orlando’s forfeit finalized the dual at 53-25.

The final round was against the host Falcons who entered the evening as the 5th ranked AA school in the current rankings.  BHVPP started strong with a major decision from Revering and a fall from Captain.  Foley swung the momentum winning the next three matches for the 15-10 lead.  Koehn closed the gap with a come from behind decision and the dual was a two-point spread heading into the strength of the Falcons line-up.  Foley would take six of the final eight matches as only Ervasti earned a fall at 182 and Orlando a decision at 285 to make the defeat 47-22.The individual match results were as followed:

The storm reached the region Friday, but the Raiders were off for their weekend adventure.  Originally scheduled to wrestle a matinee quadrangular in Oklee on Friday before bunkering down at the hotel in Thief River Falls prior to Saturday’s tournament.  However, with school closures the quadrangular was cancelled so we adapted by heading straight to the hotel.  We checked in and went to the Ralph for practice.  It was nice to have two full mats and space for the entire team to practice together for a change.  After practice, back to the hotel where the parents had set up a great team meal, some pool time, and off to bed.  Saturday morning had arrived and twelve of the teams had backed out of the event leaving only six teams left to battle it out.  Brackets varied from three-man round robins to eight-man brackets.  Revering made another finals appearance only to come up a step short of the top while Arceneau took 4th at 106.  Captain pinned both of his opponents en route to his second championship in two weekends.  Larson brought home the bronze at 120.  So did Reese Thompson at 126 going 3-1 on the day.  Koehn finished runner-up at 138 losing to a highly ranked opponent in the finals.  Peterson had a solid day going 3-1 turning his five seed into 3rd.  Schroeder jumped two spots also from a six seed for the 4th place finish.  Dean dropped his opening match and injury defaulted out for 4th.  Ervasti dominated his weight class once again for the gold at 182.  Finck put together a nice day going 3-1 for the bronze while Eggert wrestled solid and placed 4th.  Orlando never saw the second period and took top honors once again at 285.  The team finish 3rd while the Junior Varsity took home the Gold trophy for the first time in the event.  The team scores and individual match results were as followed:
