Pelican Rapids defeated Battle Lake 64-50 in a high school boys’ basketball contest on Saturday afternoon at Concordia College in Moorhead.  Jayden Rutherford led the Vikings with 21 points and McHale Korf added 16.

“It was a game of runs,” said Pelican Rapids Head Coach John Gullingsrud.  “Every time we were able to build a lead, Battle Lake would come right back to close the gap.  We were just able to maintain our scoring runs for longer stretches that theirs which was the difference in the game.”

Riley Leabo scored 22 points to lead the Battlers and Brennan Amundson finished with a dozen.

“At times we played like we should,” commented Battle Lake Head Coach CJ Peeters.  “We had some young guys step up and some guys that don’t normally get as much time step up as well.  Some guys are starting to earn some minutes and that was nice to see.  Riley played very well for us on O and D.  That was only our eighth game.  A couple of teams we have been playing now have half of their season done.  As long as we continue to grow and get better we will be fine.”

Pelican Rapids improved to 10-3 with their fifth straight win.  The Vikings will travel to Breckenridge on Tuesday and will host Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal on Thursday.

Battle Lake will play at Underwood on Tuesday and will host Hillcrest on Friday.
