Friday, January 3 the West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville Knight wrestlers hosted an inter Section Six match-up with the New York Mills Eagles.  The #15 ranked Knights (who have been rising up the ranking ladder) were 6-1 in team dual competition while the visiting Eagles were boasting an 8-2 record.  Before any further rundown of the match, an exciting side note for this dual was the fact that this was the first varsity wrestling event held in Ashby in four decades, the crowd was engaged and loud.  It was easy to feel the energy in the gym and the wrestlers responded.

The match began with a decision victory for three points by Adam Lohse, The Eagles had to show next at 113 lbs but elected to forfeit and shift a wrestler up (this happens during duals as coaches look for preferable match ups).  Mason Richter took the six points in behalf of the Knights for the forfeit.  7th grader Hunter Gruchow took the mat at 120 lbs and ground out a 9-2 decision over New York Mills junior, Chris Yoder.  The three Knight scores put the team up by an advantage of 12-0.

New York Mills was not about to roll over as they responded with four consecutive wins which put the Eagles in the lead after 145 lbs by a margin of 6 points as they reached a score of 18-12.

Junior Knight wrestler Kade Olson took the mat at 152 lbs against a formidable 9th ranked Eagle, Logan Small.  Finding himself down early in the match after giving up back points Olson dug in and took his opponent all three periods which ended in a win for the Knights by way of an 8-6 decision.  Jordan Lohse gathered six points by way of forfeit for the Knights at 160 lb as the Eagles made another shift.  The choice to move Mills wrestler Bren Salo did not pan out so well as he ran directly into the home teams powerhouse 170 lber Nathaniel Kisgen who put him away with a 5-2 decision.  The Knights were now up at this point 24-18.

Colton Lindquist gave the Knights six points as he gathered a pin at 182 lbs and Deklin Goeden chipped in 3 team points at 195 when he posted a most impressive decision victory over Elliot Mann from Mills who up till this point this season had been a major thorn in Goeden’s side.  Justin Blascyk posted a decision at 220 and the Knights heavyweight Devin Stone finished the dual with a fall as he put away his opponent to the mat to end the evening in the first period.  Final score….42-18 Knights.

Head wrestling coach Brandon Gruchow commented after the match, “It was the first time wrestling has taken place in Ashby since the early 70's. It was a different environment but one that we felt comfortable enough to wrestle pretty well in.  There was a lot of team mentality in their wrestling tonight and that's exactly what we were hoping would happen.  Not everything was perfect but guys were okay with adjusting the line-up, bumping weights, and making things happen for the betterment of the team.  We had a couple big come from behind wins that were helpful as well.  These kind of nights are fun and exciting for the wrestlers, coaches, and fans.  We were glad we could do that in the Ashby gym and thankful for the opportunity to showcase our team.”

Coach Gruchow and his grapplers will travel to Fergus Falls on Tuesday night for a showdown with the Otters.  Varsity action is scheduled to start at 7:30pm.  Thursday the Knights return to Barrett for a triangular with a pair of section rivals in the Barnesville Trojans and the #8 ranked Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie Raiders.  The activities on Thursday night will play heavily into section seedings.  Action will start at 5:00pm.
