The Ashby Girls’ Basketball Team traveled to Aitkin in hopes of completing a four team bracketed tournament only to have day two of the girls’ portion of the tournament cancelled due to inclement weather. However, they were able to take on the hosting class 2A Aitkin Gobblers in the first round game and it turned out to be an exciting game!

Despite leading most of the way, the Arrows succumbed in overtime by a score of 65-70. The Arrows used a pair of pressing defenses to build a 26-22 lead at half time. However, just enough things went wrong for the Arrows in the second half to allow the Gobblers to take the game into overtime and win it going away.

The Arrows shot only 50% (6 of 12) from the free throw line in regulation, had an untimely delay of game technical, and lost focus on just a couple of plays leading to turnovers.

“It only takes one of these errors to spell the difference in the final outcome of an overtime game,” said Head Coach Alan Niemann of the Arrows.

The Arrows did have three girls break double figures for the game: Celi Nelson (23), Courtney Koefod (17), and Kalista Aamot (11).
