The week before Christmas break was another tough challenge for the Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie wrestling team.

It started on Tuesday with a triangular against Royalton/Upsala and Frazee.  Frazee took care of the Royals in the opening round.  Then the Raiders sent the Royals home with another defeat.  The dual started with a pin from David Revering and two forfeits for Bennet Arceneau and Deagen CaptainReese Thompson added a decision and it was 21-0 before the Royals answered with back to back pins.  Jason Koehn glued his opponent to slow the bleeding before the Royals added two more falls to close the gap to 27-24.  BHVPP took control after that and never looked back winning the last five matches with pins from Hunter Dean and Craig Orlando, a tech fall from Mason Schroeder, major decision from Gideon Ervasti, and forfeit for Jaden Finck to secure the dual 54-24.

The nightcap of the triangular featured a top ten matchup with the Hornets coming in at #9 in the polls.  Arceneau stunned his opponent with a twelve second pin and Revering added a decision to make it 9-0.  Frazee then rattled off the next five matches to make the lead 25-9.  With hopes of a comeback looking slim, Koehn picked up a pin in front of Brock Peterson’s electrifying throw for another fall.  Schroeder added a quick six and the Raiders had pulled ahead 27-25 in a matter of moments.  With a guaranteed six coming at heavyweight, a fall by Ervasti would seal the deal at 182.  Ervasti stepped onto the mat against his #7 ranked opponent and did just that with a big throw and settle it in tight for the fall.  Frazee would take the next two matches but the forfeit to Orlando made the Raiders victorious 39-35.  The individual match results were as followed:

The Big Bear Classic featured forty-one teams this year and lot of highly talented ranked wrestler throughout the brackets.  BHVPP started out strong on Friday winning fifteen of their seventeen opening round matches.  However, the round of sixteen saw only four Raiders advancing to the Quarterfinals.  That number was cut in half as Ervasti and Orlando advanced to the semifinals.  Revering, Jason Koehn, Dean, and Finck navigated their way to the round of 12 in the wrestlebacks as competition closed on Friday evening with the Raiders sitting in 8th place.  Saturday morning saw a 1-3 blood round as only Dean was able to guarantee a podium place through the consolation bracket.  The semifinals were a perfect 2-0 round as falls were recorded for both Ervasti and Orlando putting them into the Championship bouts later that afternoon.  Dean would win another match before dropping his final two matches for a 6th place finish.  The 182-pound finals set up Ervasti against top ranked defending state Champion Tyson Meyer of Minnewaska.  The match went the distance, but in the end the champ was just more consistent in each position as Ervasti settled for a runner-up finish.  The 285-pound matchup featured two familiar foes as OTC’s #3 ranked Cian Buehler squared off against our two-time defending Champion Orlando.  After a scoreless first period, Buehler chose down and Orlando went to work on top wearing him down for a turn and a fall to take the top step at the Big Bear for the second time in his career.  15 of the 17 wrestlers entered picked up victories helping the team claim another top ten finish for the fourth consecutive year.  Another highlight from the weekend included Matt Mensinger earning his first career win by fall.  The boys wrestled well and were competitive in most of their matches.  It was a good measuring stick for us as we’ve reached the half-way point of the season.  A couple weeks off for the holidays will allow us to get back to full strength and prepare for the second half of the season starting January 9th in Barnesville with a big 6A triangular including West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville that could have the top seed implications on the line.  The team scores and individual match results were as followed:
